Constipation is the most common chronic digestive system disease. There are many causes, and untreated constipation can lead to other, more serious problems. Beginning with a better understanding of bowel function could help you correct some of the habits that may contribute to constipation.

Colorectal Cancer

Colorectal cancer is a condition caused by uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the colon (intestine) or rectum. It is one of the most common types of cancer in the United States with about 140,000 new cases diagnosed each year. The most effective way of combating this disease is early diagnosis and prompt treatment. It is estimated that 3 out of 4 colorectal patients can be saved if the disease is detected early and treated promptly. Knowing about colorectal cancer could save your life!

Anal-Genital Warts

Condylomata acuminata are warts caused by a virus.

Who is affected?
Warts are often but not always sexually transmitted. However, there are instances when ordinary body warts appear to be the only known risk factor.

Where?
Anogenital warts are found around the anal and genital areas.

Signs/Symptoms
A person with an anal wart may experience itching, burning, or bleeding, sometimes in association with a small mass (which is often mistaken for a hemorrhoid).

Fistula

A fistula is when there is an abnormal "tunnel" or passage from the inside of the anal canal or rectum to the skin, or to a point higher in the rectum. Most fistulas begin as abscesses in pockets in the anal canal.

Symptoms
1. Discharge of Pus and/or Stool Near the Anus
2. Irritation of the Skin Around the Anus
3. Recurrent Pain
4. Gas

Fissures

A fissure is a painful linear ulcer or tear at the margin of the anus. The constant irritation of diarrhea will sometimes cause a fissure, but more commonly constipation is the culprit. A fissure produces pain disproportionate to its size, and is probably the most painful condition affecting the anal area.

Managing Anal Itching

1. Keep anal area clean and dry, and avoid injuring the area by excessive irritation or wiping.
2. Wear cotton underwear.
3. When showering or bathing, avoid using perfumed soaps.
4. After bowel movements, wash the perineal area with a FLEET PAIN-RELIEF Rectal Pad placed on unscented toilet paper.

Gas Pain

One of the most common gastrointestinal (GI) complaints is gas.

What causes it?
About 80% of gas in the GI tract is air that you swallowed.

What are the symptoms?
